PACAWA hosts quarterly Seminar Presentations on a wide range of clinical matters. These talks are open to both members and non-members. They are designed to broaden and deepen our understanding of the clinical field and therapeutic approaches, and to facilitate lively discussion and debate in addressing common themes in the practice of psychotherapy and counselling. The seminars also offer a rich opportunity for networking with fellow members from diverse traditions and fieldwork experience. |
In addition to the regular quarterly meetings, PACAWA also conducts Information Evenings around practical practice issues as the need arises. Examples of topics covered include GST implications for practitioners and changes to the Family Law Act.
Attendance at PACAWA meetings is considered to count towards continuing professional development (CPD) hours and a CPD certificate is provided for each attendee at these meetings. Confirmation of ongoing professional development is required for annual renewal of Associate Membership of PACAWA, as well as for applying for the PACFA Register.

The theme for the 2009 seminars is ‘Inter and Intra Communications within the Clinical Setting’. We are inviting various Clinicians to speak of their own work and understanding of what these communications are and what they ‘speak of’ within different modalities and contexts.
To start off the year’s seminars, we are inviting all members to be part of an open conversation and discussion of the varied communications within the broad range of PACAWA clinical members.
All this and much more is anticipated! We are looking forward to hearing from you all.
Later in the year we are planning a seminar, presented by Art Therapists, who will explore communications within their framework. At this point, we have a sketched notion, (pun intended!) of a panel presentation and possibly a practical component included in this evening. Keep your eyes and ears open for more details later in the year.
There are also some initial conversations and ideas that are still at the rudimentary stages with other Clinicians. We are looking forward to hearing presentations from some of these experienced Clinicians, who can offer us further food for thought. The discussion and debate that is possible as part of our seminars, hopefully allows and encourages us all to continue to open ourselves up. Listening, speaking, questioning, participation and involvement are all available to you in 2009!

The PACAWA Committee warmly welcomes all members to our AGM and Annual Presentation Award, followed by a presentation from Judy Griffiths:
7:00pm - Inter and Intra Communication: Unfolding a Deeper Understanding of Inner Life Forces
Presenter: Judy Griffiths BA (Hons), CQSW, MAASW
Following university in the UK in the 1960s, Judy qualified as a social worker and was an active member of the British Association of Social Workers and the Group for the Advancement of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in Social Work. In her early career, she worked with the dying and their families in two London teaching hospitals before joining the prestigious Family Welfare Association, a community agency in London using psychoanalytic principles in working with people experiencing a wide range of family crises. With the professional focus of FWA, in common with the majority of her colleagues, she went into psychoanalysis. Since the 1970s her work and professional development as a psychotherapist have followed the analytic tradition and tutelage.
When Judy came to Perth in 1987 with her family, she established a clinical practice in Swanbourne as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. She continues to be supervised in her clinical work by two Sydney psychoanalysts. She sees adults in psychotherapy, working mostly long term. She has a particular interest in how people survive and grow through traumatic loss. She is a group worker and runs a Balint Group. She has conducted five Infant Observation Seminars, of which three have been for the New South Wales Institute of Psychiatry Infant Mental Health Postgraduate Qualification. Judy also teaches, conducts workshops and supervises clinical practitioners.
8:00pm - The Interplay of Different Kinds of Communication in Coming to a Deeper Knowing of the Self
Presenter: Judy Griffiths BA (Hons), CQSW, MAASW
While thinking about this presentation, I heard a phrase on the radio used by May Banks Edwards, the founder of pre-primary education in Australia. She talked of “the science of unfoldment of understanding”. The words captured my imagination. Isn’t this what we psychotherapists are about?
What is it that enables a person to unfold a deeper understanding of his or her self? What do we as therapists do to facilitate discovering this deeper knowing of the self? What do we know and what can we articulate about this? These are the questions I started with. Join me in an exploration of what, as we look at the different kinds of communication, conscious and unconscious, is taking place in the sessions.
Attendance at PACAWA meetings counts towards meeting continuing professional development criteria for all levels of PACAWA membership, as well as for registration on the PACFA Register. A certificate of attendance is provided at each meeting.
PACAWA members are encouraged to attend – no fee.
Interested non-members are invited and welcomed and are charged a fee of $25.00. Tea, coffee and snacks will be provided.
FRIDAY 27TH NOVEMBER 2009
9.00am – 4.30pm
Note: This one day workshop replaces our usual Christmas event
Venue and cost to be confirmed: August flyer will follow.
The Management Committee invites all members to mark this day in your diary. Following on from shared thoughts and conversations over recent years, requesting more time at PD events, we have decided to take the step and offer a day of presentations. The presenters are people from the field of psychotherapy & counselling though not all of them working clinically.
It is shaping up to be an interesting day. Rosemary Watkins will update us on ARCAP and National developments, before moving into the presentations. Noel Giblett is presenting ‘The Person of the Therapist in a Psychotherapy Practice: Some Reflections and Discussion on What We Do and How We Do It'.
Michael Tunnecliff is discussing aspects of his book, ‘Risky Practices, Ethical Dilemmas’ and Susanna Howlett and Maggie Down are speaking about Clinical Supervision. Each presentation includes time for questions and discussion.
I will be sending a flyer out next month with the full details and RSVP details requested from you by September 30th.
I am looking forward to seeing many of you there.

Presenters and co-facilitators: David Harvey and Jackie Lewis
An informative and enjoyable evening was shared by PACAWA members at the aforementioned PD. Co-presenters and facilitators, David Harvey and Jackie Lewis provided theoretical, anecdotal and practical material to inform us more about the opportunities provided through the medium of Art Therapy.
Drawing on Monty-Perleau, Stern, Trevarthen and others, as well as his own rich experiences, David provided thoughtful and interesting ideas and evidence of the way in which Art therapy can enhance our intersubjective experience.
Jackie and David also spoke from their individual perspectives of the value of their work across a broad age spectrum. David works with children 3 – 16. Jackie works with adults many of whom are suffering from Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. Their enthusiasm and interest in their work was evident.
Following Jackie and David’s presentations, we were invited to make our own marks on the paper. This was greeted with varying degrees of trepidation and nervousness by many, as well as anticipation from others. We moved through a process of creating our own artistic version of our personal history, through to working with another person on a semi connected project and then onto a more interactive working together and development of this piece. The final part of this process was the laying down of all our original artwork, (personal history). We were invited to place our picture near to another work that had similar aspects to our own. This exposed some quite remarkable features of connection that became more visibly apparent both to the individuals and the collective.
As the evening drew to a close, many of the participants spoke of feeling surprised by the level of heightened energy from this experience.
